Volunteer Opportunities:
Support and donations from the community have helped the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History become a Smithsonian-affiliated, world-class facility. The Museum now seeks volunteers to help maintain the Museum's commitment to providing an exciting and impressive experience to visitors.
Volunteers are integral to the continued success of the Museum and provide a valuable service, not only to the Museum, but to the entire community.
Opportunities for volunteers, aged 16 and up, include:
Curatorial
Volunteers provide assistance in the maintenance of the Museum’s three permanent collections: The Great Locomotive Chase; Railroads: Lifelines of the Civil War; and Glover Machine Works: Casting a New South.
Library and Archives
Volunteers help preserve and conserve the Museum’s archival collection by processing and cataloging archival materials (documents, maps, photographs, books, magazines) according to collections standards. Volunteers will be trained in the appropriate handling of archival materials.
Education
Volunteers lead individual and group tours of the Museum, providing interpretation of the three permanent collections, and, when appropriate, of visiting exhibitions.
Volunteers may also assist visitors and provide private tours during special events.
Administration
Volunteers prepare bulk mailings, answer phone requests, and assist with research, among other projects for the Museum.
Housekeeping
Volunteers assist staff in the care and maintenance of the building and grounds of the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History. Duties may include helping repair and maintain the building, yard, and exhibits, including the Glover Factory and the General. Skills in electrical work, carpentry, and mechanical work are a plus.
Special Events
Volunteers assist in a variety of areas during Museum-sponsored events throughout the year, such as exhibit openings, lectures, etc.

College Intership Opportunities:
The Southern Museum offers unpaid academic internships to college students providing
an opportunity to explore museum’s for potential career opportunities. Internships are a structured work experience allowing students to relate theory to practice while
interacting with museum professionals.
College students work on projects under the direction of museum staff in one of the
museum’s departments or gain exposure to overall museum operations by spending
time in all three areas. All internships are unpaid.
Internships available at the Southern Museum:
Curatorial
Interns provide assistance in the maintenance and of the Museum’s artifacts (3-
dimensional objects) and exhibits through training and structured projects. Students
may help clean, identify and catalog artifacts as well as the numerous tasks involved in
research and preparations for exhibitions.
Library and Archives
Students help preserve the Museum’s archival collection by processing and cataloging
paper materials (documents, maps, photographs, books, magazines) through training
and structured projects. Interns may help with research and production of displays or
exhibitions using the museum’s extensive primary source document and photo
collections.
Education
Working with the Museum’s education staff, interns may explore the world of providing
educational tours and public programming through training and structured projects.
Numerous educational experiences are available to help develop children’s hands-on
programs, large scale special events, teacher’s resource materials or lead group tours.
Museum Studies
For college interns seriously considering a career in the museum field, this option
provides students exposure to all three departments within the museum. Through
training and structured projects students can gain an understanding of overall museum
operations.
Frequently Asked Questions:
- All internships are unpaid and must be pre-arranged.
- All travel and accommodations are the responsibility of the student.
- College freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible.
- Internships may be taken for academic credit. Students are responsible for all
paperwork and approvals required by their institution prior to the start of the
internship. - Students are responsible for working with the museum staff to create a schedule
allowing them to complete the work hours required by their school. (Please note:
There is limited availability for work hours on weekends depending upon the
