Engage students or groups in local history during a fun, interactive outreach program from the Southern Museum!

Recommended for Pre-K – 3rd Grade

Fee: $45 - 1st class; $30 - each additional class(Requests for programs outside the local area will be charged an additional fee to cover mileage and staff expenses)

1) I’ve Been Working on the Railroad
Program Length: 45 min. • Maximum class size: 30
“All Aboard” for a great way to explore important railroad jobs including the engineer, conductor and porter. Children’s literature, music and role playing activities help young children discover the people that make trains run.

2) Railroad Signaling
Program Length: 45 min. • Maximum Class size: 30
Learn about safety signals used on railroads including flag, lantern and whistle signals. This program combines children’s literature, safety games and the chance to toot your own whistle making it a program everyone will remember.

3) Music in the 19th Century
Program Length: 45 min. • Maximum Class size: 40
Music was an integral part of 19th century American society. Hear a variety of musical instruments from the Civil War era such as the harmonica, jaw harp, and fife. Children’s literature, songs and the chance to create your own tune makes this a program little ones won’t forget.

1) Life of the Common Soldier
Program Length: 45 min. • Available for all class sizes
An interactive program allowing students to explore the daily life of a Civil War soldier with the help of reproduction Confederate and Union uniforms, equipment and 19th Century artifacts. The importance of musical instruments to soldiers will also be demonstrated.

2) The Great Locomotive Chase
Program Length: 45 min. • Maximum class size: 40
The Great Locomotive Chase is one of the most daring railroad adventures in history. Follow Andrews’ Raiders, who were among the first to receive the Medal of Honor, in this exciting audio-visual presentation. The General’s long history will also be explored.

3) Photography During the Civil War
Program Length: 45 min. • Maximum class size: 40
The Civil War was the first to be extensively photographed. Learn about the invention of the photographic process as well as its evolution and social impact. Reproduction camera and stereo views allow students to experience the early images that gave Victorian families a glimpse of the world.

4) Music in the 19th Century
Program Length: 45 min. • Maximum class size: 40 students
Music was an integral part of 19th century American society. Hear a variety of musical instruments from the Civil War from the banjo, bugle, dulcimer, harmonica, and drum while discovering musical traditions and the stories behind popular Civil War songs.
