The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History Archives has a growing collection of Civil War related materials. Within this collection, we house a small, but varied selection of U.S and C.S. railroad quartermasters’ documentation, original Confederate and Georgia Railroad currency, original Civil War era sheet music, soldiers enlistment/promotion documentation, original letters written by soldiers serving in the Confederate and Union armies, and a variety of Civil War History periodicals.

Civil War letter dated September 19, 1861, from Confederate soldier W.P. Summers to his family in Georgia. Summers was serving in Phillip’s Legion which had trained at Camp McDonald in Big Shanty, Georgia. The letter is written at Camp Arbuckle, Meadow Bluff, Virginia and contains information about his march under General Floyd from Lynchburg to Meadow Bluff, Virginia. He states that “Gen. Floyd treats us like children.” Original is handwritten in ink and in protective sleeve. A transcript is available.

Civil War receipt dated June 6, 1864, from Capt. Kessel of 2nd Indiana Cavalry, 1st Division, 2nd Brigade, to J.F. Sommers for oats and 35 bushels of fodder received at Big Shanty, Georgia. Original handwritten receipt is in protective sleeve and a transcript is available.

Civil War receipt dated June 6, 1864, from Captain E. Barnet, 2nd Indiana Cavalry, to Mrs. Summers for 3 dozen bundles of fodder “for the use of USA” received at Big Shanty, Georgia. Original handwritten receipt is in protective sleeve and a transcript is available.

Civil War letter dated June 18, 1862, from Confederate soldier T.W. Wingo to his wife, Elizabeth. Written at Louden, Tennessee, Wingo tells of traveling from Chattanooga and hears that the “Yankees are looking for a fight, but haven’t seen any.” He hopes for peace because he is getting tired of the war. He also describes the crops in Tennessee. Wingo enlisted as a private in Co. E, 43d Georgia Regiment, Forsyth Co. Kellogg Rifles, on May 10, 1862. He was transferred to the regimental band and died July 9, 1863. Handwritten in ink on a ledger page, the letter is in a protective sleeve. A transcript is available.

Brown envelope addressed to “Mrs. M.A. Wingo, Big Shanty, Ga., Cobb Co.” Postmarked Milledgeville, Ga. November 9, 18--. No stamp. In protective sleeve.

Handwritten invitation acknowledgement to Mr. J.S. Wingo, which states “Lissie returns compliments and will be pleased to accompany to the party. Respectfully, Lissie Sommers. Big Shanty, Georgia, February 24, 1881.” Note in protective sleeve.

Note in pencil, undated, for J.J. Wingo to “dead head to Chattanooga” and come out with a caboose. Reverse side contains math calculations and “J.J. Wingo.” Note in protective sleeve.

Brown envelope from “Louisville & Nashville Railroad Co.” addressed to “Mrs. W.D. Chastain, Kennesaw, Ga. (in very faint type). No stamp and postmark is illegible except for “May 15, 1915.” Penciled across the front is “Hat Pattern.” Envelope is in protective sleeve.

Western and Atlantic Time Table booklet beginning July 6, 1890. “W.T. Wingo” is penciled across the top.

Small pocket note pad in booklet form with notes written in pencil. Each page represented a month in 1900, and seems to be a work schedule, daily miles traveled and personal notes (purchased 2 bottles of Fletcher Castoria). He also recorded any events which held him up (“wreck at E & W”). Orange colored covers have “Lion Coffee” ads on both sides. “W.F. Wingo” is penciled across front cover.

Small pocket note pad in booklet form with notes written in pencil. Each page represented a month in 1895, and seems to be a work schedule, daily miles traveled, and personal notes. Interesting notes include “30th May – Crew carried soldiers to Chatta and I lost the day.” Also, “Leon Kendrick killed Jany 5, 1896, Sunday a.m.” Note pad is blue with front cover embossed “Horsford’s Handy Guide to the Cotton States and International Exposition, Atlanta, 1895.” Printed information inside includes guide to Atlanta’s hotels, theaters, parks, churches, and city government. Each page contains a small ad for Horsford’s bread and a section about the bread.

Western and Atlantic Railroad Employee’s Pass Check for 1889. “Feb 15, 1889 – Pass J.S. Wingo from Chatta to Atlanta.” Pass is in 2 sections and contained in 2 protective sleeves.

Certification card for Richmond & Danville Railroad Co., Atlanta and Charlotte Division, dated September 26, 1892. States that J.S. Wingo signed Form 1, G.S. relative to coupling and uncoupling cars.

Air Brake Instruction Car certification card for N.C. & St. L. Railway dated January 21, 1899. States J.S. Wingo, “Brakeman” was examined in operation of Westinghouse Automatic Air Brake.

Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway pass for J. Wingo between Atlanta and Kennesaw until May 31, 1901. Pass has conductor’s punches along the edges.

Pamphlet entitled “Constitution and General Rules of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen – 1901.”

Description: The following items were purchased by the Kennesaw Civil War Museum (Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History). The items were placed on inventory in 2001 under the “William J. Knight Collection” in order to reflect the collection’s original ownership.

William James Knight was one of the raiders who stole “The General,” in Big Shanty (Kennesaw), Ga. during the Civil War. Born January 24, 1837, in Wayne County, Ohio, he was a member of Co. E, 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment at the time of the raid. He was captured with the rest of the raiders, but escaped from the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, and made his way back to the Union lines in November 1862. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in September 1863.

Death certificate of William J. Knight. Information contained in the certificate indicates he died September 26, 1917, in Stryker, Ohio, of acute nephritis and uremia poisoning, at age 79. His wife, Emma, signed the certificate as next of kin.

Post war (near turn of century) black and white photograph of William Knight wearing his Congressional Medal of Honor. Knight was one of the Andrew’s Raiders. (Previously inventoried as P2001.015.)

Remains of a scrapbook compiled by Confederate veteran Nat Poyntz. His home was in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky. Poyntz joined the Confederate Army at age 14 and fought under General John H. Morgan’s cavalry command. He joined the U.S. Army after the Civil War as a civilian clerk and was stationed in the Philippines for six years following the Spanish-American War. He was transferred in 1904 to the office of Depot Quartermaster in Massachusetts. Poyntz was 80 years old when he retired and died two years later.

The scrapbook contained postcards, documents, photographs, and Confederate money glued to black construction paper pages. The glue and paper caused damage to all the items; some extensive while others could be removed with little damage. The following items were found in the scrapbook:

Confederate document - Requisition and Bill form, written and printed, dated March 1, 1863, for “15 barrels of molasses and 183 lbs. Fresh pork - $445.75.” Document in protective sleeve.

Confederate document - Special Requisition form, written and printed, dated July 13, 1863, for “wagon wheels and mule shoes.” Items received at Frederick, Maryland, were “one hundred pounds mule shoes and four wagon wheels.” Document is in torn and ragged condition and in protective sleeve.

Confederate document - printed and handwritten, dated August 5, 1864, from the “Office of Medical Director of Hospitals, Macon, Ga.” giving a 30-day furlough to “Private H. Field of Co. A. 10th Tenn. Battery.” Signed by “J.T. Nichols, Medical Director of Hospitals.”

Envelope for above document. Written in the upper right is “Official”, with “Captain Co H, 10th Tenn Regiment” written in middle.

Confederate document - printed, “General Orders, No. 82” from the “Adjutant and Inspector General’s Office, Richmond, Va. June 12, 1863.” This order concerns the organization of “Partizan Rangers.”

Handwritten pass on plain paper – “Headquarters 1st Brig 2nd Div, Angeles, PI, Oct. 27/99,” for N. F. Poyntz to travel to Manila. This pass was signed by General Joseph Wheeler as Brigadier General of United States Volunteers. Wheeler was an ex-Confederate general who volunteered for the U.S. Army after the Civil War and was prominent in the Spanish-American War.

Newspaper article, unknown source and date – “Soldier, 80, May Yet Draw Bonus.” Article concerns Poyntz’s fight to get a bonus denied to him because of age.

Newspaper article, unknown source and date – “Confederate Veteran of Hub Going to Texas Reunion.” Concerns Poyntz traveling to Dallas, Texas, for the United Confederate Veteran’s Reunion in 1925.

Newspaper article, unknown source and date – “Hub’s 80 Year Old Soldier Has Pacific Coast Rival.” Article about James H. Johnson, 81, who worked at Quartermaster store at Fort Mason, California. He had 67 years in the army and stated that Poyntz should not retire.

Newspaper article, unknown source and date – “Army Clerk, 77, Puts Ku Klux to Rout.” Article about Poyntz’s 3000 mile trip to the South and West and how he gave chase to two hooded KKK members in Kentucky. He stated that he lost time due to “their youth.”

Newspaper photograph of Rev. William Mack Lee, a black servant of General Robert E. Lee. He is in a Confederate uniform with many reunion ribbons and pins.

Civil War letter written by Confederate soldier E.J. Humphries at Camp McDonald, Big Shanty, GA. on August 10,1861, to his wife and children. Humphries was elected 1st Corporal on July 5, 1861, in Co. A, Phillip’s Legion (Georgia). The letter is in good shape, written on white paper (which has turned yellow with age). A transcript and historical research is available.

Union soldier’s letter from Edward M. O’Brien of Battery H, DeGoyer’s Battery, 1st Regiment, Michigan Light Artillery, to friends. The letter is dated June 28, 1864, and is written from Brush Mountain, Georgia, near Kennesaw Mountain. He states that they have “taken a contract from father Abraham  we call it fighting by the month.” He also details the position of the armies around Brush Mountain and provides a sketch of the arrangement. Union soldier’s letter from George W. Gaul to his aunt and uncle on May 30, 1864. The one-page letter is written on the battlefield of Dallas, Georgia. Gaul talks a little about the recent battles and expectation of being attacked that night. Envelope addressed to Mr. Aysam (?) Knox of Groveland, Mass. Is included. In protective sleeve. Civil War letter written by Colonel William Dowd, 24th Mississippi Infantry on January 13, 1864, from a hospital in Marietta, GA. Contents of the letter concern Dowd’s resignation from the regiment due to illness. Letter is written on legal size blue paper. The paper has been torn at the folds and two pieces have separated (but are included). Document is in a protective sleeve and a transcript and history is available.

Collection consists primarily of newspaper articles. The articles are attached to an album sheet with each article’s place and date of origin indicated on a tab. Most articles are from February 1972, and are concerned with the return of the General to Kennesaw. The photos in these various articles are repeated throughout collection. The contents of the album are as follows:

Atlanta Century for April 13, 1862 – a facsimile newspaper printed by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution during the Civil War Centennial of 1961-1965. Article entitled “A Train Stolen on the W. & A!” part of news paper.
